: the aggregation function must provide a specified demand modification (reduction or increase) at a given time to the product buyer,
: the aggregation function must have the capacity to provide a specified demand modification (reduction or increase) during a given period, when called upon by the buyer (similar to a reserve service),
bi-directional conditional re-profiling
: the aggregation function must have the capacity to provide a specified demand modification during a given period using a bidirectional power range (-a, +ß) MW which include demand increase and decrease, when called upon by the buyer (similar to a reserve service).
In ADDRESS, each willing consumer provides the aggregation functions with modifications of his/her consumption profile: the aggregation functions are therefore in charge of selling a deviation from the forecasted level of demand, but not a specific level of demand.
Product buyers are electricity market participants (such as a balancing responsible party, an electricity retailer or regulated network operators): they thus submit requests to the aggregation function through any type of market process, whereas aggregation functions gather and optimize flexibilities coming from their portfolio of consumers to shape active demand offers (see above). Thirty one services for the product buyers have been identified and detailed by the ADDRESS consortium  .
Once such products have been traded, the aggregation function communicates to the network operators (DSO and TSO) the active demand program it envisions in the different load areas in order to check the technical feasibility of the amount of active demand proposed within the concerned load areas.
Once the technical feasibility has been validated by the network operators, the price signals and volume signals are sent to the participating energy boxes, the aggregation function checking the consumer profiles for settlement and billing purposes which come from metering measurements.
The robustness of these three products, related to a change of the basic product assumption (viz.: aggregation functions are in charge of selling a deviation from the forecasted level) has not been studied by ADDRESS. However, detailed studies of the social and economic factors which drive this type of business approaches are available :
the ability of households to adopt a technology like ADDRESS depends strongly on how much time people spend at home, and thus to the core of their controllable loads
, interruptible or thermal loads) looked for by the ADDRESS concept. The routines that people adopt to meet their life schedule, will drive the adoption of a technology like ADDRESS in the future.
the system-level benefits may be worth addressing by regulators’ or policy-makers: yet, they will not determine whether the other stakeholders will actually engage in active demand initiatives. This is why the individual benefits and costs for each demand response stakeholder
have been considered by the ADDRESS project; and they all depend upon the regulatory regime under which they are performed as revealed by the three demonstrations performed in France, Italy and Spain.
