UPGRID project focuses on addressing the constraints and needs arisen from poor observability of LV grid, local accumulation of distributed generation, risks and difficulties in managing the distribution network, aging infrastructure and social and environmental restrictions that inhibit the grid development. To be successful, UPGRID proposes an open, standardised and integral improvement of the LV grid.
UPGRID has objectives in three interrelated areas: technical, economic and social. In the technical area it is aimed at developing tools to operate the LV grid, improving LV power system observability and integrating active demand in the LV Network Management System. From an economic point of view the project explores the increase of LV infrastructure capabilities and resulting boost of value provided by DSO to the Electrical System and the development of new LV products & services (manufacturers & ICT providers). Finally, its social objective is focused on the creation of conscious behaviour of efficient electrical energy use by consumer and the improvement of the service provided to consumers (better restoration time, more accurate info, etc…)
During the first months of the project 38 sub-functionalities have been identified so far. They have been classified based on Clusters and Functional Objectives using the EEGI roadmap 2013-2022. The most relevant and selected Functional Objectives are “Monitoring and control of LV networks (D7)”, “Smart metering data utilization (D10)”, “Network management methodologies for network operations (D9)”, and “Novel approaches to asset management (D12)”. This is aligned with the objectives and main topics of the UPGRID project.
UPGRID consists of four demonstrators (one per DSO participating in the project) which are being developed and tested since April 2015 up to June 2017.
DEMO 1 (Spain, led by Iberdrola): It is being carried out in the area around the city of Bilbao (North of Spain). This demonstrator is mainly focused on:
This will impact positively in the quality of service and reducing the time without electricity service after contingencies to customers. Moreover it will offer them more detailed information to improve consumption behaviour.
The demo base over which is being built on is Bidelek Sareak (http://bidelek.com/), an initiative promoted by Basque Government through the Basque Energy Agency (EVE), and Iberdrola. The development of the demo is planned from April 2015 to June 2017.
DEMO 2 (Portugal, led by EDP): it is being carried out in Lisbon within the parish of Parque das Nações. Apart from some sub-functionalities related to LV network management, it is worth underlining the Portuguese approach to active demand topics (end users engagement through the combined use of AMI and Home Energy Management Systems), market design (engagement of stakeholders through a Neutral access platform) and sub-functionalities based on control of load and electrical vehicle.
DEMO 3 (Sweden, led by Vattenfall): It is being carried out in a rural part of southern Sweden close to the small town of Åmål. This demonstrator is mainly focused on monitoring and control of LV network and smart metering data utilization, stressing one functionality related to automation and control of MV network and other focused in testing interoperability of equipment from different manufactures with the LV Network Management System.
DEMO 4 (Poland, led by Energa Operator): It is located in the city of Gdynia. The Polish demonstrator is focused on monitoring and control of LV network (utilisation of the LV network for transferring data other than metering and use of AMI system for monitoring the performance of LV network). It is worth mentioning the existence of a sub-functionality based on remote management of DER (implementation of SCADA/DMS LV with micro generation control).
